When we arrived at Douthitt High School as freshmen, the buildings in our school showed the signs of their 40 years of age. It might be hard to think back to that time when there was a landscaped yard in front of the cafeteria instead of a concrete courtyard, and when the grassy knoll our students enjoy on a rare sunny day didnt exist. After a few noisy years of construction, we now have a modern school. In our time here, it has gone through a complete change from old and mature, to fresh and new. We, on the other hand, have gone from being fresh and new high school students, to old, experienced, mature young adults ready to graduate. Weve had many great people build us up to what we are. First and foremost, we should thank our†¦show more content†¦We were grossed out when classmates drank a disgusting concoction that included fresh sardines and mustard at an assembly. Weve survived the WASL, an earthquake, the Senior Project, and everything else weve had thrown at us. At Douthitt, weve had many memorable times, and built close friendships. But tonight we are leaving this place behind, to make our mark on the world. Well be going many different ways: to work, to community colleges or universities, to the armed forces, or maybe just to our couch to play video games. From these points we will disperse even further, filling many diverse roles in life. Hopefully we will all become successful people. By this I mean to succeed in the way Ralph Waldo Emerson described: To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded. No matter what your goals are in life, if you adhere to this simple idea that success comes from lifting up people that surround you, life will be good.
