Thomas King Not Just a Reaction to Colonialism - 1459 Words

A Coyote Columbus Story shows the Native point of view of the beginning of colonialism. When introducing Christopher Columbus into the short story, Coyote says [t]hat is the one who found Indians (King Coyote 123). In many of Kings stories, he writes narration without quotations, but this particular short story doesnt contain a single quotation. The style in which it is written is not similar to many other post-colonial texts. Rather than depicting historical facts directly and accurately, this story portrays real characters, such as Columbus and the Indians, but rather doing strange things, like playing ball. While the events didnt occur the way King states, he is reaching for a deeper meaning of the how colonization effected†¦show more content†¦Old Coyote shows her usual trickster self by accidentally creating the colonizers, while Coyote seems blind and perhaps even a little ignorant to what really happened when the colonizers came to Indian soil. Written to be heard ora lly steers this story away from fitting into typical post-colonial literature. It is also important that the interpretation of post-colonialism is structured (Turcotte 4), and this short story is not quite chronologically or logically structured, though meaningful. While A Coyote Columbus Story has evidence of post-colonialism, the colonial and pre-colonial qualities of character representation and order, I am unsure exactly what to categorize it as. While I agree with parts of Turcottes analyzation of Kings theory and language, I do not agree with his criticism of what King has written in Godzilla vs. Post-Colonial. Turcotte states that King is refusing that focus be put on the point of view of both parties in the colonial divide, though it is essentially what he states in his essay (Turcotte 6). He also believes that King’s writing also frequently focuses on material which non-Native people simply have no access to, reminding them that they are outsiders to this culture whi ch they often so readily feel they own or to which they feel they should have unrestricted access (6-7).
